If you visited us at Milawa this summer, you may have caught a glimpse of our new Market Garden sprouting beyond our Restaurant and Cellar Door.
Planting a variety of fresh vegetables and herbs, you’d be forgiven for thinking a cook is kept to his kitchen. Instead, Head Chef Bodee Price has been busy tending to beetroot and carrots, leafy greens, eight different varieties of tomatoes and zucchinis.
The list goes on, as does his passion for food.
Inspired by working in urban cities his whole life and never feeling fully connected to seasonal produce, the Market Garden is Price’s latest passion project that sees a direct influence over what dishes are created, and enjoyed, at Patricia’s Table Restaurant.
“Just because it’s summer on the first of December doesn’t necessarily mean tomatoes are ready to put on a plate. We didn’t add tomatoes on the menu until the first week of February, because that’s when they were ripe in Milawa season”, says Price.
There’s no comparison to growing your own produce, and plating up a dish using ingredients picked that morning.
“Growing up with an Italian Grandfather, food was always at the forefront of family occasions”, remembers Price. “My whole life I’ve loved seeing friends and families brought together by sharing a meal.”
In giving ‘homegrown’ a new name, our food offering at Brown Brothers is now not only inspired by local country flavours, but bringing people together using ingredients sourced from our own backyard.
And despite the restrictions we’re facing and the announcement of our cellar door’s temporary closure, the Milawa Market Garden still flourishes. Bodee and his team have reimagined our restaurant and wine bar offerings to deliver simple, wholesome, and delicious meals to locals in Milawa, Oxley, Tarrawingee and Wangaratta.
Some favourites from the menu; smoked pork belly paella, lamb & rosemary meatball linguine, Asian rice noodle salad and sticky date pudding for dessert.
A positive way to support our casual staff and keep our kitchen in motion during these uncertain times, ‘BROWNS to You‘ lives up to the expectation set by our Wine Bar bites. The new menu changes daily according to what’s available or in season, and includes the option for add-ons like a sustainable tote bag or your favourite Brown Brothers wine.
