Dark Empress Wine Cocktail

With autumn our thoughts turn to red wine and nights at home. This Dark Empress wine cocktail  is just the thing for a night in.

*Flip it for a sweet treat: Substitute Merlot for Cienna!


The Wine

  • 60ml 18 Eighty Nine Merlot

The Rest

  • 30ml spiced rum
  • 30ml orange juice
  • 15ml lemon juice
  • 15ml simple syrup
  • Orange slice & grated nutmeg to garnish
  • Ice


  1. To make simple syrup:
    1 cup of sugar
    ½ cup of water
    In a small saucepan, combine the sugar & water over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine all merlot, rum, juices & syrup & shake well. Strain into jar or tumbler filled with ice & garnish with orange slices and grated nutmeg.
