The eldest of three children born to Peter and Jan Brown, Eliza and her two younger siblings spent most of their childhood in a carefree world with grapevines and vineyards as their backyard.
The trek from this carefree child to the now CEO of Peter R. Brown Family Vineyards, first female Director and Board Member of the famous Brown Brothers Wines and mother has been an incredible journey.
After completing school at PLC in Melbourne, Eliza went onto study photography and then after traveling in Europe an Advanced Business Diploma in Advertising. After these experiences Eliza began working outside of the family business with a number of well known Melbourne advertising agencies. This business experience outside of the family business had proved invaluable.
In the late 1990’s her father, Peter Brown, purchased two wineries in the renowned Rutherglen wine district, independently of the larger family company, Brown Brothers. He loved All Saints Estate and St Leonards Vineyards complete with 100 year old Scottish castle located on the Murray River.
Eliza made the decision to make the ‘Tree Change’, so in 2001 she decided to move and has never looked back. Eliza started as the Cellar Door Manager and then as Sales and Marketing Manager. It was here that her “official” working life within the wine industry began.
She quickly became known in the region as a “go getter’ and sat on a number of management groups such as the Winemakers of Rutherglen and the Tourism North East Board.
In late 2005 when she was pregnant with her first child, Eliza’s father Peter was killed tragically in a road accident. Eliza became the CEO of Peter R. Brown Family Vineyards with her sister and brother as joint owners and board members. At the same time all three siblings maintained their interests in Brown Brothers Vineyard. In 2005 Eliza became the first woman Director and Board Member of Brown Brothers, Milawa. Due to these circumstances Eliza is passionate and routinely speaks about ‘Succession Planning’ at corporate events.
Eliza loves that the wine industry brings people together, fine wine, local produce, family and friends, to laugh and enjoy life.
In 2007 Eliza was a finalist in the prestigious Telstra Business Women’s Awards and in the same year was named as one of the ‘Future Leaders’ of the Australian Wine Industry. Recently she was nominated in the 2011 Australian ‘In Style’ magazine awards as a ‘Woman of Style’.
