Featured Wine: 2008 Moscato Rosa
2008 Moscato
Release date – 11th August 2008
THE WINE
The 2008 is the first release of the Moscato Rosa. The wine has a vibrant strawberry pink hue, giving it a light and delicate appearance. Rose petal and a red berry aromas along with spicy perfume dominate the nose and follow through to the palate along with a fruitiness that is balanced by acidity and spritz. A wine of universal appeal, the retained carbon dioxide gives a mild frizzante effect resulting in a lively and fresh wine. Serve well chilled and enjoy while young and vibrant.
THE GRAPE VARIETIES
Muscat of Alexandria is part of the exotic family. The Romans are believed to have given the grape its name as they found its distinctive aroma akin to that of musk, and hence called it Moscato - smelling of musk. Viticultural experts have identified at least 200 different members of the family and several of these different clones have been cultivated in for as long as grapes have been grown here. If harvested early, it produces delicate, perfumed, crisp, dry white table wines but if left to hang on the vines several weeks longer it produces rich flavoursome dessert wines. Cienna is a variety developed at the CSIRO in which has parentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sumoll (rare Spanish variety). It favours a warm climate and shows ripe red berry fruit characters.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
This wine is made from Muscat of Alexandria grapes with a small percentage of Cienna to give the rosé colour. The grapes were harvested from mid February to late March 2008 at baumés ranging from 11.5 to 13.0. The wine was bottled soon after fermentation with an alcohol of 7.0%, a pH of 3.3 and an acid level of 6.3 g/L.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS
The Moscato Rosa is so delicate and fresh that it is a fantastic drink to have on its own. With food it makes the perfect partner to berry tart with home made raspberry ice cream. A spicy Rogan josh curry on jasmine rice would also make a great match.
Featured Wine: Zibibbo
Zibibbo - it's Zibubbly of choice!
There's a new sparkling arrival at Brown Brothers and its called Zibibbo. Bursting with bubbles and summer fruit, Zibibbo is THE accompaniment for any occasion.
Huon Hooke reviewed Zibibbo late 2006 and commented "It is delicious. Admittedly it is not as refined or subtly complex as the more expensive Italian Moscatos (I’m thinking Vietti’s Cascinetta and Pio Cesare’s Moscato) but it is a lovely drink and great value at about $15. Bursting with aromas of passionfruit and lychee, it is young, simple and fresh but ever so appealing as a pre-dinner sipper, a refresher, or post-prandial drink with fresh fruit, light cheeses – or just on its own" (Good Weekend 2/12/2006)
Zibibbo is available at Cellar Door and your local retailer now.
